Researchers included randomized controlled trials and prospective cohort, case-control and cross-sectional studies. Of 2,754 abstracts identified, three prospective cohort, three case-control and three cross-sectional studies met the criteria. They quantitatively pooled measures of associations using meta-analytic methods.

Nine studies provided data on a total sample of 88,974 people, including 3,203 AMD cases. A high dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids was associated with a 38 percent reduction in the risk of late AMD. Fish intake of at least twice per week was associated with a reduced risk of both early and late AMD. Although this meta-analysis suggests that consumption of fish and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids may be associated with a lower risk of AMD, the authors of the study point out that there is insufficient evidence from the current literature, with few prospective studies and no randomized clinical trials, to support their routine consumption for AMD prevention.

SOURCE: Chong EWT, Kreis AJ, Wong TY, et al. Americans can take simple steps, such as wearing appropriate eye protection, to protect their sight, however.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 219,000 Americans went to the emergency room for eye injuries in 2006. More than half of those injuries occurred at home.

Ninety percent of home eye injuries can be prevented by wearing safety goggles while doing lawn work, cleaning or working on the car, experts say. Safety goggles should have "ANSI Z-87" stamped on the lenses or frames. The stamp means they have been certified by the American National Standards Institute.

People should also wash their hands when they complete their chores before touching their eyes or face.

"When we perform the same chores or tasks around the house, week after week, we can get complacent about how quickly accidents can happen," Daniel D. Garrett, senior vice president of Prevent Blindness America, said in a prepared statement. "We all need to take extra care when we're at home to protect our sight and not wind up in the emergency room."

Prevent Blindness America has declared September "Home Eye Safety Awareness Month" in an effort to draw attention to everyday risks to vision.

Children are at special risk because of their "creative" use of ordinary household items such as coat hangers, glue and pencils. Prevent Blindness America offers the following tips to help kids learn eye-safe behaviors:

Teach children not to run around with forks, knives, pencils, combs or toothbrushes.

Keep detergents, cleaning supplies, nail polish remover, mouthwash and cosmetics in locked cabinets or out of reach.

Keep clothes hangers hanging in the closet.

Place nails, glue, screwdrivers and other tools out of children's reach.

Keep younger kids away from work areas where power tools are in use.

Patching Lazy Eyes in Children

A new study could be great news for children with "lazy eye."
British researchers say youngsters may not need to wear an eye patch 12 hours a day, as is currently recommended, to treat the condition.

Instead, wearing the patch just three to four hours a day over a period of three months may do the trick to improve sight, the new study suggests.

"Lengthy durations of daily patching, which are incredibly burdensome on the child and their parents, are clinically unnecessary," said study co-author Merrick J. Moseley, a senior lecturer in the Department of Optometry and Visual Science at City University in London, England.

His team reported its findings in the Sept. 13 online edition of the British Medical Journal.

Lazy eye, or amblyopia, is caused by a disturbance to the vision pathways between the eyes and the brain, and is associated with blurred vision or crossed eyes. Studies have shown that patching can improve vision.

Although prior findings have found that patch use 12 hours a day is no better than six hours a day, many doctors have continued to prescribe more than six hours of patching daily.

To find out how well patching worked, Moseley's team studied 80 3- to 8-year-olds with amblyopia. The children were told to wear a patch for either six or 12 hours a day. The youngsters were also electronically monitored to see how long they actually wore their eye patch.

The team found that children prescribed six hours of eye patching a day did just as well as those prescribed 12 hours a day. "Moreover, monitoring showed that children wear their patches only for about half the time that they are prescribed," Moseley said.

"Children who actually patched 3 to 6 hours each day did just as well as those who patched 6 to 12 hours each day," Moseley said. However, "those who patched under 3 hours a day did significantly less well than the rest," he added.

In addition, the researchers found that children under 4 years of age require significantly less patching than those over 4 years. "The findings did not vary depending on the type of amblyopia -- anisometropic, strabismic or combined," Moseley said.

"Patching is not better beyond 3 to 4 hours a day, particularly in the case of young children," Moseley said. "The findings should signal the end of the treatment strategy wherein children are prescribed lengthy patching regimens such as 'all waking hours,' which have previously found favor among many clinicians."

"This study is an eye opener," added Dr. Daniel J. Salchow, an assistant professor of ophthalmology and visual science and director of pediatric ophthalmology at Yale University School of Medicine. "The paper really tells you what you get for a dose of patching," he said.

"We know how to treat amblyopia," Salchow said. One of the biggest problems in treating lazy eye is getting children and parents to use the patch for the prescribed time, he noted. "But those who keep the patch on longer improve faster," he said.

Salchow said that he usually prescribes six hours a day or less of patching. Most often these twitches, known as 'ocular myokymia' last for several minutes per day for a few days. They can be a nuisance. The most common causes include fatigue and stress, although it seems caffeine levels may play a role too. It was believed that excess caffeine could trigger these twitches, but a recent Italian study has indicated the opposite, namely that some individuals could drink caffeine to decrease the twitches. Eyedrops such as anti-histamines can also minimize these twitches too.

Myokymia is benign, but if it worsens you should have it assessed at our office.

Children's Eye Exams

Children should have a thorough ocular assessment by the age of 3.

Several points:

children do not have to be literate to be examined.

school 'vision' screenings are inadequate and do not substitute a thorough eye/vision assessment by an optometrist

children rarely complain if there is serious visual developmental problem

the earlier a problem is discovered, the easier it is to treat

the provincial health plan insures visits for children

Dr. Rozanec
eyedoc@bellnet.ca
www.portcrediteye.com

Buying Prescription Eyewear

Our office carries a large selection of eyewear for our patients. Researchers were surprised at the importance of this vitamin for human health. In fact, having adequate Vitamin D levels in our body was generally more significant in decreasing cancer levels than cessation of smoking.

Vit D is produced in our bodies when our skin is exposed to sunlight. This vitamin is stored in our bodies and used as required.

Due to lack of sunlight in winter months, Canadians generally have lower than required levels of Vitamin D in their diets. Supplementation may be required in winter months.

So... enjoy the sun... and you don't need to get burned to produce enough Vitamin D. Usually 15 or 20 minutes/day will do for most Caucasians, whereas those with darker skin will require longer exposure.

Dr. Rozanec
905-278-9119
eyedoc@bellnet.ca

Some New Products

Our office now features Maui Jim sunglasses. Diabetes is a leading cause of permanent vision loss in working adults. My practice receives many referrals from family doctors and other medical practitioners to assess for diabetic eye disease.

A diabetic eye disease assessment consists of a number of tests. Dilation of the pupils using eye drops is very important as it is required to assess the retina (ie. back of the eye) properly. Photographs of the retina are taken in the office to check for subtle damage to the delicate blood vessels in the eye, and to compare the eyes year to year.

Diabetics require a complete annual eye assessment to decrease the risk of permanent eye damage.

Dr. Rozanec
eyedoc@bellnet.ca
www.helpingyousee.com

Ordering Contact Lenses?

There are a number of recent significant innovations in contact lenses, such as...

-more oxygen permeable materials (more O2= better corneal health)
-Bifocal contact lenses
-lenses that resist dryness better (ie. much better for those patients with dry eyes)

If you wish to re-order your lenses, and we have them on record in our office, just email us (eyedoc@bellnet.ca) when you are ready to re-order.
